Valentine's Day Traditions

How do you define love? Love can be defined as an intense feeling of deep romantic affection towards someone.  Every year on February 14th, we celebrate Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate our love for one another.  

 

If you reside in the U.S., you are most likely buying a card, candy or flowers for your spouse or significant other. You might even be going out to a romantic dinner. Since today is the day of love, we wanted to share how other countries celebrated February 14th, Valentine’s Day.  

 

South Korea

Love is celebrated on the 14th day of every month. On this day, Koreans eat black noodles.

 

Argentina

They celebrate Valentine’s Day, but they also have a “Sweetness Week” in July where kisses are exchanged for treats.

 

South Africa

The women in Africa pin their crushes name to their sleeve for all to see.

 

Wales

Valentine’s Day is actually celebrated on January 25th where they make carved love spoons and exchange them with each other.

 

Philippines

Mass weddings are held on Valentine’s Day where 100s-1000s of people marry all at once.  

 

Ghana

Valentine’s Day is Chocolate Day as Ghana is one of the largest cocoa producing countries. They create special chocolate menus all over on this day.

 

Japan

Women give men chocolate on this day to “pamper the men”.  The men return the favor on March 14th.

 

Scandinavia

Men send anonymous poems to women signed with one dot for each letting in their name.  If the women guess correctly, they get an egg on Easter from the man, if they are incorrect, they have to give him an egg.  This tradition is also done in Denmark.

 

Denmark

You give friends and admirers white pressed flowers known as snowdrops and Valentine’s Day cards.  

 

Estonia

On Valentine’s Day, they celebrate friendship.

 

China

Love seekers visit the matchmaker statue in a temple to find love.  

 

Peru

Mass weddings are held where 100s-1000s of people get married and they also exchange orchids as this is their native flower to Peru.
